What is sports therapy?

The most common definition of sports therapy was drawn up by the DSThB (German Sports Therapy Association) in 1986 and reads:

“Sports therapy is an exercise therapy measure that uses suitable means of sport to compensate for impaired physical, psychological and social functions, regenerate, prevent secondary damage and promote health-oriented behavior. It is based on biological principles and incorporates elements of pedagogical, psychological and sociotherapeutic methods in particular and attempts to achieve lasting health literacy.”

Sports therapy is therefore a specialized form of therapy that uses physical activity and exercise to promote rehabilitation, prevention and general health.

In contrast to general fitness programs, sports therapy is individually tailored to the specific needs and health problems of the patient. It should be part of every treatment plan

Misconceptions about sports therapy

There are some common misconceptions about sports therapy:

1. sports therapy is physiotherapy: Physiotherapy is usually passive measures in which therapists activate the metabolism and relax the neuronal system using manual therapy, for example. In sports therapy, patients have to become active themselves. Sports therapy approaches are integrated into both MTT (medical training therapy) and rehabilitation measures.

2. for injuries only: While injury rehabilitation is an important part of sports therapy, it goes far beyond that. It can also be used preventively to prevent illness and improve general fitness.

3. requires intensive training: Sports therapy does not have to be intensive. Exercises are customized to ensure they are safe and effective for the individual.

Advantages of sports therapy

Improving physical health
Sports therapy can help to improve overall physical health by increasing strength, flexibility and endurance. This can be particularly helpful for people with chronic illnesses or chronic pain.

Promotion of rehabilitation
After injuries or operations, sports therapy can speed up rehabilitation and facilitate the return to normal activities. Studies have shown that targeted exercises can support the healing process and restore functionality.

Prevention of injuries
By strengthening the muscles and improving movement sequences, sports therapy can reduce the risk of future injuries. This is particularly important for older adults or people with a high risk of injury.

Improving mental health
Physical activity has been proven to have positive effects on mental health. Sports therapy can reduce stress, improve mood and promote general well-being.

Who is sports therapy suitable for?

Sports therapy can be beneficial for a wide range of people.
For chronic diseases: People with conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or arthritis can improve their quality of life with customized exercises.
Post-operative: After an operation, sports therapy can support rehabilitation and accelerate the return to full functionality.
Older adults: Sports therapy can help maintain mobility, reduce the risk of falls and promote general health.
Amateur and professional athletes: People who want to improve their fitness, health, technique or performance  can benefit from individually tailored training programs.
